NEW FOOD & WINE Carmel’s Culinary Renaissance: With more than 60 restaurants in one-square-mile and an population of less than 4,000, Carmel-by-the-Sea boasts more restaurants per capita than any other small city in the United States (with no chains!). The thriving culinary scene in Carmel-by-the-Sea recently welcomed two new restaurants,and a re-imagining of an icon, including:

Nora’s is a new restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea that offers "Carmel's Comfort Cuisine." Co-owned by Loie Alnimri and his wife, Sarah, along with Loie's cousin Faisal Nimri, the restaurant is a tribute to Loie's grandmother, Nora. The menu is intentionally broad and eclectic, featuring a diverse range of comfort dishes, including gnocchi, meatloaf, and fried chicken and waffles, all at an affordable price point. Nora’s is a true family affair, where diners can experience hospitality, high-quality food, and a gorgeous setting, both indoor and out. Hours run 11am-9pm daily.

Originally founded by Clint Eastwood, the iconic Hog's Breath Inn has been "respectfully reimagined" by its restaurateur owner, Lee Morcus. The restoration focused on preserving its "original soul and rustic charm" with updates like new flooring and decor. The menu features local favorites, such as clam chowder and grilled artichokes, alongside unique dishes. It has a self-contained pub and a dog-friendly patio with a special "Pooch Menu." The Hog’s Breath also stays open late on weekends, providing a rare late-night spot for hospitality workers. Hours are 11:30-3:30pm and 4-11pm daily, until midnight Friday-Saturday.

VIN-by-the-Sea offers an elevated and fresh experience to Carmel's culinary scene, nestled in the Su Vecino courtyard on Dolores Street. This all-day restaurant and wine bar, formerly a gallery space, features a full, chef-driven kitchen and an extensive by-the-glass list. The menu is crafted to complement every pour with raw bar delicacies, refined small plates, and fresh coastal flavors. A favorite among locals and visitors alike, VIN By the Sea is a vibrant gathering place where art, wine, and coastal cuisine come together.

NEW (ISH) HOTELS Opened in May 2024, Stilwell Hotel features 42 meticulously designed guest rooms and public spaces that blend modern, minimalist design with a relaxed, beach-inspired environment. Offering serene open-air courtyards, complete with fire pits and fountains, pet-friendly policies, and a café with wood-fired pizzas and a complimentary continental breakfast, the Stilwell is perfect for those looking for a high-end, contemporary lodging experience.

An eagerly awaited sister property to the luxurious L'Auberge Carmel, Carmel Beach Hotel opened in the former Colonial Terrace space. This sea-centric newcomer provides an exclusive experience with 26 guest rooms, many with private decks and sweeping ocean views. The hotel's culinary offerings include complimentary breakfast baskets and terroir-inspired seaside fare overseen by Michelin star Chef Justin Cogley, as well as access to Spa Adeline - the only hotel spa in Carmel-by-the-Sea!

Two Le Petit Pali properties opened recently, Le Petit Pali at 8th Ave and Le Petit Pali at Ocean Ave. These boutique inns offer a reinvented take on the classic bed-and-breakfast, blending a charming, home-like feel with high-end amenities and sophisticated design. Guests are treated to a complimentary Champagne Continental Breakfast, a daily social hour with local wines, and an array of luxury in-room comforts, from Diptyque bath products to fine linens and daily cookie delivery. Both locations are also pet-friendly, offering a "Le Petit Pawli" amenity suite for dogs, and provide a chic, intimate, and highly personalized lodging experience.
NEW RETAIL & ART GALLERIES Carmel Vibes Gallery features Nicholas Trofimuk, a fine art photographer and master printer whose career spans over 35 years. Working primarily in black and white before expanding into unenhanced archival color prints, he is known for capturing beauty in everything from the sensual unfolding of a flower to the expansive New Mexico landscape and cityscapes worldwide. In 2024, he began to spend time on the Monterey Peninsula to be near his daughter and was immediately captivated by the natural beauty of the area, inspiring him to open Carmel Vibes Gallery. While his works reside in prestigious collections globally, his art is guided by a mission to create pieces that transport the viewer.

The second location to the popular Somewhere in Carmel store, Somewhere on Ocean opened July 2025 and is a unique shop that sells a variety of items, including clothing, home goods, ceramics, and accessories. The name itself is a nod to the charming and quirky character of Carmel-by-the-Sea, a town famous for not having street addresses. The store is a place to wander, find hidden gems, and discover the unexpected - inviting visitors to become a part of the Carmel-by-the-Sea community and its unique, artistic atmosphere.

Gallery MAR, a popular contemporary art gallery, has recently opened a second, larger location called Gallery MAR North, just two blocks north of its original space on Dolores Street. This expansion, which celebrated its grand opening last year, was driven by the need for more wall space to showcase a greater volume of contemporary art. The new gallery features concrete floors and white walls, creating a more modern, luminous feel that contrasts with the warmth of the original space.

The House of Cardoon is a unique lifestyle shop expanded with a new location in San Carlos Square. The shop, offers a unique and colorful mix of local makers, vintage finds, and hard-to-find brands.

Jenni Kayne, the California lifestyle brand, known for its timeless staples and neutral colors, opened a store in Carmel Plaza. Jenni Kayne is a prominent lifestyle brand that embodies the "California cool" aesthetic, focusing on timeless, neutral, and effortless design for both wardrobe and home. Founded in 2002 by Jenni Kayne herself, the brand has built a loyal following by prioritizing quality, natural fibers, and creating what they call a "uniform" of essential pieces meant to last - a great addition to Carmel Plaza.

For sweet lovers, Swedish candy store Sea Shack Candy Co. and Gelato by the Sea are newly opened in the same little shopping square, between Ocean And 7th in Carmel Square.

NEW THEATER RENOVATION The historic Golden Bough Playhouse theater has undergone a complete renovation, which includes new stadium-style seating, a revolving stage, gallery viewing, increased restrooms, expanded lobby and concession areas, and better accessibility for those with disabilities.

Carmel-by-the-Sea will host its third annual Carmel-by-the-Sea Culinary Week, June 2 through June 10, 2023. The dreamy seaside village, renowned worldwide for its charm and natural beauty, is dishing up its distinct culinary evolution by highlighting a wide array of restaurants, esteemed chefs, and accolades throughout the weeklong festival.

Carmel Culinary Week’s “Art of the Plate” theme pays homage to the artistic heritage of Carmel-by-the-Sea and the creative, imaginative spirit the destination brings to culinary enthusiasts. An impressive lineup of restaurants will offer special prix fixe menus (wherein chefs will offer dishes not normally found on the menu), complimentary tastes and treats, and immersive culinary demonstrations and experiences, such as a new self-guided Pub Crawl-by-the-Sea, a Sparkling Sake Special at Toro, Bowmore Whiskey Oyster Luge at A.W. Shucks, and a Wines of Tuscany Guided Tasting at La Balena.

Art is everywhere in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It's in the past and the present. It's in galleries, historical landmarks, and the stunning natural beauty of the coastline. If you're walking down the beach, it may be sitting on an easel in the sand, being created brushstroke by brushstroke by a plein air artist right in front of you.

Yoga starts with a simple breath. In and out. If you're on the seashore in Carmel-by-the-Sea, you will hear the waves pulsing into the white sand of Carmel Beach, beginning to synchronize with the cadence of your breath.

Visit Carmel, the destination marketing organization for Carmel-by-the-Sea, is committed to promoting responsible tourism with a more extensive stewardship initiative, which launches today. Visitors (and locals) who arrive in Carmel will notice new signage strategically placed around the village as well as bright banners along Ocean Avenue, the main boulevard through town. The initiative is being communicated to the public and locals through web content, a dedicated video, and robust social media support, all focused on a community-first approach to marketing the destination. The Love Carmel program includes educating visitors on the ways they can make a difference, highlighting “Know Before You Go” information and “Voluntourism” opportunities. Ultimately, custom swag will be available for purchase with proceeds to go toward specific beautification projects.

A local task force comprised of community leaders, residents, and destination stewards collaborated on the "Love Carmel" vision. It emphasizes treating the village and beach with respect from an environmental and sustainability standpoint but also carries a more heartfelt message about being mindful and to cherish the natural beauty and community culture. The reference to "Locals" recognizes the residents who care for our Village. It also reminds visitors that, while Carmel-by-the-Sea is a world-class destination, people live, work, raise families and retire here and that, while Carmel-by-the-Sea is a world-class destination, it is a community first.

“One beautiful trend emerging in tourism is that more and more travelers understand the obligation to visit responsibly, and many even prefer destinations that encourage it,” continued Herzog. “We will harness this awareness and continue to champion tourism’s benefits, mitigate its impacts, and collaborate with our tourism partners in the county and state to promote respectful and responsible visitation.”

PLAY
Visit the beautiful dog-friendly, leash-free Carmel Beach where its white sands make the perfect grounds for a walk and swim with your dog. For an active afternoon, take your dog on the water with Carmel Surf Lessons as they’ve partnered with Life-Unleashed to bring surfing to the dog-friendly Carmel Beach with hour-long lessons and a surf camp for dogs.

If you’re looking to explore the area, rent an e-bike from Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop and ask for a sidecar for your pet to cruise around the village's hilly streets.

No visit to Carmel-by-the-Sea is complete without shopping for unique and special mementos. Almost all shops and boutiques in the village are dog-friendly and even have water bowls, doggie treats and biodegradable bags. Diggity Dog and the Carmel Dog Shop are stocked full of collars, leads, apparel, treats and toys, so be sure to stop in for a souvenir.

STAY
During the mid-80s, Hollywood icon Doris Day, along with local businessman Dennis LeVett, assumed of the famed Cypress Inn. Day insisted that four-legged companions are as welcome as their humans, which helped put Cypress Inn on the map as the “pet friendliest” inn in the “pet friendliest” town in America. Accommodations like "Yappy Hour" and a full doggie menu are offered daily.

Cravable experiences and flavors from Carmel-by-the-Sea extend beyond sea-salt filled breezes and sun-kissed summer days. The culinary scene in this quaint seaside village is thriving with more than 60 restaurants in one-square-mile. From freshly foraged seafood offerings to seasonal produce from the surrounding Salinas Valley, visitors and residents alike are treated to vastly diverse menu items that soon become cravable staples to any visit. This season, home chefs can adapt one of Carmel’s favorite dishes in their own kitchen.



La Balena Carmel features artisanal rustic Italian food with a menu that rotates daily to maintain the integrity of their locally grown and slowly prepared food philosophy. On days when Emanuele and Anna Bartolini, owners of La Balena, have time to fire up the grill at home, they’re usually reaching for this delicious chickpea pancake as a light bite before dinner. This gluten free dish (served cold) is a treat they typically enjoy when spending time in Florence.



“We find ourselves snacking on La Cecina as a late afternoon snack at one of our favorite spots in the city center Cantinetta da Verrazzano, located right between the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio,” explains Anna. “It is a recipe also found in Liguria, where it is known as Farinata, as well as in France.”



Emanuele offers several tips to make this dish your own: “we recommend La Cecina either as-is, or as a base topped with cured meats, such as our favorite Prosciutto Toscano, or topped with your favorite grilled vegetables such as eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and peppers drizzled in olive oil.”



La Cecina from La Balena



Ingredients

1 1/4 cup chickpea flour

1 1/2 teaspoons of sea salt + an extra sprinkle for the top

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil + plus a little more to coat the bottom of the pan and drizzle on top after cooked

2 1/2 cups of water



Materials

In Italy this is usually cooked in a round pan, but we like to use our square 10” x 10” pre-seasoned metal pizza pan.



Directions

Mix the chickpea flour, salt and water with a whisk until smooth. Try to remove all the lumps. At this point add in the Extra Virgin Olive Oil and keep whisking until the oil is also blended. It should have a thin, runny consistency. Add a little more water if it is too thick. Cover the mixture (I use a plate on top of the bowl) and let sit for at least an hour. Some recipes suggest up to 4 hours. Coat the bottom of your pan with a drizzle of olive oil coating the bottom. Preheat the oven to 430 degrees Fahrenheit and cook for approximately 28 minutes. Keep an eye out and watch it bubble as it starts to cook! We like ours extra crispy on the sides, so we usually allow it to cool in the oven. Sprinkle a little salt on the top while still warm. Enjoy plain or with your favorite toppings.

Carmel-by-the-Sea hosts its annual Poodle Day on Saturday, Oct. 6 for all dog lovers. The day consists of a parade, welcoming all poodle or poodle mixes to participate, followed by afternoon beach play, and ending with an evening cocktail party at Cypress Inn.
