CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif., October 17, 2013 -- Proving you don't have to be among the biggest to be among the best, Carmel-by-the-Sea has been ranked among the "Top 10 Cities in the United States" by Conde Nast Traveler magazine, as part of the annual Readers' Choice Awards.

"By far the smallest city on our list, Carmel has a big personality with endless charm and beauty," the magazine notes in its November 2013 issue.

Not only is Carmel among the elite in the country, it is one of only three California destination cities in the Conde Nast Traveler Top 10 -- San Francisco ranked No. 3 and Napa ranked No. 10. Also, Carmel earned the highest marks among the California trio for atmosphere, one of six categories awarded points by the readers. (Other categories are Culture, Friendliness, Restaurants, Lodging and Shopping.)

"Whether it's a couple here for a romantic getaway, or a group gathering for a special celebration, Carmel always seems to deliver magical memories."

Not surprisingly, Carmel's ocean views were duly noted in the rankings, as were the city's quaint cottages and shops, "artsy boutiques" and selection of restaurants -- all which "make for a great weekend getaway," Conde Nast Traveler wrote.

"And with all the direct flights coming into Monterey from throughout the west," Potter added, "it's easier than ever to get to Carmel."
