Zagat-rated Grasings Restaurant is Known for Quality and Elegance

"I think eating should be enjoyable, relaxed and comfortable," says Chef Kurt Grasing of his eponymously named Carmel eatery. "It's an event, a little bit of a celebration. The word 'restaurant' means to restore—not only our health and hunger but to restore our souls, giving us a happy, positive outlook." With a philosophy like that, how can one fail to enjoy a meal at Grasing's?

Kurt knew that he wanted to be a chef as a teenager, and it's a profession that has taken him to kitchens around the world. "I like creating things with my hands, making things that people enjoy," he says. And at Grasing's, those things include Paella that he puts his own spin on – substituting the traditional rice with orzo pasta – resulting in a dish that's a little lighter on the palate. Another favorite in his Onion Tart, a medley of caramelized onions with a touch of cream and blue cheese, served with toasted leek rings and a roasted fennel sauce.

Grasing's goal is to ensure that his guests leave with the sense that the food was delicious and that they had a really nice time. "Every day is another day on stage," Kurt says. "And our team views it that way. Yesterday's meal doesn't count for today's customer. We're always working hard and don't rest on our laurels."
