For many of our visitors to Carmel-by-the-Sea, their first and, perhaps most consistent, contact with the locals comes at the lodging property where they'll be staying. We are fortunate to have so many beautiful and inviting properties here, with passionate and dedicated innkeepers who unfailingly will go the extra mile to make their guests feel right at home. This "Inn-Side Look" series is designed to give visitors an up close and personal peek into some of our properties.

How long has your inn operated in Carmel-by-the-Sea?
It has operated as an inn since the 1930s.
Are there any interesting historical or unique anecdotes about your property?
Our Inn was originally built in 1926 by two sisters from San Jose who used it as a private beach residence. During the early 1930s, the second owner started renting out rooms. There have only been five owners of this property since it was built in 1926.
What reasons do your frequent repeat guests give as to why they keep coming back to your inn when they visit Carmel?
They like the location, original architecture and the ambience.
What "go-the-extra-mile" steps does your inn take to ensure your guests have a memorable stay?
We serve breakfast to their room every morning, surprise them with champagne for anniversaries and birthdays, provide maps of Carmel, and make dining reservations.
What's the most unusual recommendation/question a guest has asked of your front desk personnel?
A potential guest wouldn't make a reservation because we do not have air conditioning!
Why do you love being an innkeeper?
Get to meet some great people from all over the world. Every day is unique and memorable in some way. It's always satisfying to make a guest's visit even more than they expected. Repeat guests become friends, it's like having family come to visit.
