Running, Hiking and Biking in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Although the world-famous Big Sur Marathon finishes at the corner of Rio Road and Highway 1 just a scant three blocks outside of Carmel-by-the-Sea, it is not necessary to endure the 26.2 miles in order to reap the benefits of health and wellness on a vacation to Carmel. Visitors who come bearing running shoes, hiking boots or road bikes will find plenty of stunning coastal routes and mountain peaks to enjoy on two feet or two wheels throughout the area.

On Two Feet

Exploring Carmel-by-the-Sea on foot, no matter the pace, is one of the great pleasures of a visit to the village. A classic walk is a stroll down Ocean Avenue to Carmel Beach, where you can continue along the Scenic Bluff Path that offers stunning views of famous Carmel Beach and Point Lobos beyond. Be prepared to get the blood pumping as you climb back to the center of town up Ocean Avenue.

Mission Trail Nature Preserve is 34 acres of Monterey Pine, Coastal Live Oak, and Redwood forests that offers three miles of dog-friendly trails perfect for short runs, hikes and walks. Get off the pavement and explore the park and its array of natural plants in the southeast corner of town, right across the street from the Carmel Mission Basilica.

On Two Feet

If you want an easy workout, Carmel-by-the-Sea's quaint size — just one square mile — make it the perfect place to loop a quick morning or evening walk or jog. Simply step out the door of your hotel or inn and chart a course around the village and along Scenic Path. It's almost impossible to get lost. Tackle as many hills as you want, and get to know some quiet side streets along the way.

Hike the Coast

Hiking abounds in the area and Point Lobos State Natural Preserve is perhaps one of the most scenic places to explore just a few minutes south of Carmel. Painter Francis McComas famously claimed Point Lobos hosted "the greatest meeting of land and water in the world." And we think you'll agree. For more adventurous hikes, go to nearby Palo Corona and Garland Ranch Regional Parks with numerous trails and impressive peak views. For a memorable hiking day trip, Big Sur is your place for some of the best coastal scenery in the world, but make sure to plan ahead, since it's a 45-minute drive from Carmel.

Cycling in Carmel-by-the-Sea is a choose-your-own-adventure activity through sea air and stunning scenery. From Carmel, 17 Mile Drive will take you past the legendary links of Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay alongside rocky and rugged shoreline to secluded coves and lone Cypress trees. We recommend this amazing route for more advanced cyclists.

Carmel Valley Road climbs away from Carmel-by-the-Sea through fertile farmland and verdant vineyards. For cyclists with an appetite for distance, this road will take you where you want to go. And the best thing is that when your legs and lungs have had enough, you can treat yourself to award-winning food and wine back in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

And now for something totally different — how about pedaling with your canine companion's tongue flapping in the wind beside you? Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop right in the heart of the village offers bike rentals of all kinds, as well as sidecars that will accommodate dogs. Ride around the village in style with a four-legged passenger at your side. That's a bike ride you and your furry friend will remember forever.
