Carmel-by-the-Sea Carmel Artists - Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham

Marie-Clare Gorham is a folk artist heavily influenced by the ethos of the California Arts and Crafts movement, and medieval themes. Her work is showcased locally, she is a frequent collaborator with wherever there's coffee, Captain + Stoker in Monterey + Stationæry in Carmel,(including the upcoming Artisan's Row Fall Market this Saturday.) Her letterpress greeting cards are sold throughout California, and her "dainty doodles" are often seen worn as fabric on both her and her children.

"I'm drawn to the idea of embracing Carmel's history as an artist's colony, and replicating some of the original mural work we still see in corners of downtown. Having this new mural weave in seamlessly with Carmel's unique aesthetic would be photogenic, but also pragmatic," said Marie-Clare.

Carmel-by-the-Sea unveiled the Carmel Shell mural on June 8, 2020. Created by Carmel-based folk artist Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham, the mural is now on the façade wall of the Paloma Furnishings building on Mission and 6th Ave. The colors are inspired by the original murals within the Carmel Mission Basilica and the pale pink background is a nod to the classic Hofsas House Hotel while the Gothic Blackletter calligraphy is an homage to the sign at the Wayfarer Inn. The shell itself is a symbol of Carmel and honors a sense of place and history, as the patterns within the shell pay tribute to the tile steps by Little Napoli.
