The unusual spelling of Stationæry is no accident, nor is it merely an affectation. "My wife and business partner Alissa is a letterpress operator and stationer," says owner Anthony Carnazzo. "She has a 100-year-old letterpress and creates high-end wedding invitations, restaurant menus and personal stationary." The spelling is an Old English version of the word.

Anthony grew up in a Monterey Italian family, surrounded by "food, family, friends and noise." "It's part of my DNA to make food and drinks and take care of people," he says. So, when he and Alissa envisioned Stationæry, they saw a place where "we want you to feel like you're visiting an old friend, a place that's comfortably attentive." The Carnazzos purposely chose their off-the-beaten-path San Carlos Square location for its "hidden gem" quality. "That's the vibe I wanted," Anthony says. "It's like finding a secret treasure; totally out of sight, can't be seen from the street. It's really a locals' joint, but we welcome everyone."

And those who find it are rewarded with a high level of attention to quality. "We source our ingredients as locally as possible with a farm-to-table vibe and proteins from local providers," Anthony says. "We change the menu often with the seasons. Thanks to our remarkably talented Chef Amalia Scatena, our food is always fresh, delicious, colorful and super tasty." Stationæry also takes a culinary gourmet approach to coffee. Anthony formerly ran a coffee roasting company in Los Angeles and now procures beans from a former associate who buys directly from growers around the world. "We get much higher quality beans that way," he says.

The Carnazzos pride themselves on providing a high level of presentation in an unpretentious setting. The interior, designed by Alissa, is esthetically gorgeous yet friendly and welcoming.
